Teacher Externship Program

Partner With Educators. Strengthen the Workforce Pipeline.

The Teacher Externship Program connects local educators with Southeast Texas employers to bring real-world workforce insight into the classroom.

By hosting teachers during the summer, employers help bridge the gap between education and industry — ensuring students are better prepared for high-demand careers in our area.

Why Participate?

Today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce. When teachers understand what local industries expect from employees, they can better prepare students with the right skills, behaviors, and career awareness.

Through the externship, employers:

  • Build meaningful partnerships with local schools
  • Increase awareness of their industry and career pathways
  • Influence classroom instruction tied to workforce expectations
  • Strengthen the regional talent pipeline
  • Support career readiness for future employees

How the Program Works

Teachers participate in a two-week externship experience. Employer host sites provide placement for one week of the program, allowing teachers to gain direct exposure to workplace operations and career pathways.

During their time at a host site, teachers:

  • Observe workplace practices and daily operations
  • Engage with industry professionals
  • Learn about in-demand occupations and skill requirements
  • Explore career pathways within the organization
  • Gather insight to develop classroom lesson plans aligned with workforce needs

Teachers rotate to a second host site during the program, expanding their understanding of multiple industries.

At the conclusion of the externship, teachers develop and present industry-informed lesson plans that connect academic standards to real-world applications. These lessons are implemented during the school year to increase student awareness of career opportunities and workforce expectations.

Participation is limited to ensure meaningful engagement between educators and industry partners, and teacher placement is aligned with subject area and industry relevance whenever possible.

Program Impact

Teachers develop:

  • Industry-informed lesson plans
  • Deeper understanding of career pathways
  • Awareness of workforce expectations and employability skills
  • Presentation to inform all participating teachers of what they learned

Students benefit from classroom instruction that reflects real workplace expectations and highlights high-demand career opportunities in Jefferson, Orange, and Hardin Counties. Teachers who successfully complete the program receive a stipend paid for by the Texas Workforce Commission Teacher Externship grant.
